** KEY VIDEO CORRECTION: At 2:53 when discussing protein intake and for keto, I misrepresented this issue. You can still eat protein on a ketogenic diet. Some people can eat up to 150g protein per day while maintaining ketone production (that's ~3 chicken breasts). I want to make sure this point is clear. At the time of shooting this video, we misrepresented the ease at which protein "kicks you out of ketosis." You can definitely have a chicken breast. Carbs are the big driver of kicking you our of ketosis. I am sorry for the confusion!
I have used ketogenic diets many times in the past for various reasons.
My only "issues" with keto are as follows:
1) Many people end up eating unhealthy foods simply becasue they fit the macro composition. Processed bacon, non-organic cheese, and low-quality vegetable oils/animal meats all fit a keto setup… but they should be avoided.
2) Many of the most nutrient dense foods have carbs. It's a shame to totally restrict those.
3) Some people (certainly not all) have issues with sustaining a keto diet.
What is a Ketogenic Diet? Will it work for you? Are carbs the enemy?

Keto Diet for Beginners Weight Loss…Is It Right For You?
This was my answer to a question from one of our Fit Father for Life program members that I wanted to share with you. Hope it helps.
Here's the truth. Almost every single popularized diet out there, including ketogenic diets, CAN get you great results with your weight loss and overall health. If they didn't, you wouldn't keep hearing about them, right?
But, here's the thing…not every diet is going to be a great fit for your specific lifestyle and routine. So in this video, I wanted to clear a couple things up about one popular diet in particular, and answer the question, "what is a ketogenic diet?". Because when you understand the basics, you'll be able to decide for yourself whether or not it's the right weight loss diet for you or not.
The Basics – What is a ketogenic diet? What is Ketosis? (0:40)
Before we look at whether or not this diet is right for you, we need to first understand the theory behind ketogenic diets. And that starts with looking at our macronutrients (proteins, carbs, and fats). Because any weight loss diet is going to put your body in a calorie deficit, the real question is where are those calories mostly coming from?
Well, as you'll discover in this quick video, ketogenic diets are focused on eating larger amounts of healthy fats and very low amounts of carbs. In a nutshell, this causes our body to draw energy from fat instead of carbs (a process called ketosis), and this is the basis of its fat burning benefits. This is where the term ketosis comes in.

At (2:12) you'll learn more about the process of ketosis.
Here's why ketogenic diets might not be right for you. (2:47)
Ketogenic diets are one of the more restrictive and strict fat loss diets out there. In fact, slipping up even a little and eating a bit too many carbs can completely reverse the fat loss process. Your body will go back to drawing energy from those carbs, and the high volume of fat you're eating will once again be stored as extra weight. Not good, right?

So, the big takeaway here (especially for men and women looking for long term, sustainable fat loss results) is that ketogenic diets can be a bit risky and unsuitable if you don't want to commit to a strict diet long-term. If you still want to enjoy the occasional carbs and even proteins, it's probably not a good idea to sign up for a diet plan that takes that away from you.
There are other effective fat loss diets out there that don't require such narrow guidelines, and I believe that the best fat loss diet for you is the one you can actually stick to.
So I hope this brief video helps you decide whether or not ketogenic diets will work for you. And what exactly ketogenic diets are. Because as you probably know, there's a lot of different fat loss diets out there, and the best way to decide which one is right for you is to understand the basics of each.
And this is particularly important for the men and women over 40 that we work with to help them lose weight and live an overall healthier lifestyle.
